Submission Review Criteria

The Conference Submission Review Committee will use four criteria to review submissions for selection and inclusion in the conference program. The program invites submissions to have focused discussion groups and paper and poster sessions.

The four criteria, used to evaluate both kinds of sessions, are clarity of presentation, interest, quality, and applicability. In the table below are listed the criteria with a description of how these criteria apply to review of either plans for focused discussion groups or abstracts for paper or poster presentation.

The Committee will evaluate each submission by rating how well it fulfills each of these four criteria. The Committee will also determine how the topic submitted best meets the Conference Purpose of stimulating dialogue among participants, Conference Goals and specific 2011 Conference Objectives. As a result of their review, the Committee may ask submitters to reconsider the kind of session for their topic – either to develop their topic as a discussion group or a paper or poster presentation.

Criteria Used to Review Plans for Focused Discussion Group and Abstracts for Paper or Poster Submissions

Plan for Focused Discussion Group Abstract for Paper or Poster Presentation
Clarity of Presentation

The Plan for Focused Discussion Group is clearly presented and developed, provides a coherent sense of the focus for discussion and one that supports development of the topic through discussion, and delineates desired key learnings or participant objectives that may be achieved within the allotted 60 minutes for this kind of session.

The ways knowledge gained from discussion of the topic can be incorporated into professional practice logically flow from the selected topic and its proposed development.

Specifically the:

  • Focus and purpose of topic are clearly identified with a logically developed plan for discussion
  • Rationale presented supports selection of this topic
Questions identified to stimulate discussion relate to the focus of the selected topic and demonstrate a logical approach for development of the topic for discussion.  Proposed questions are supportive of achieving the goal of the discussion and support participant achievement of the desired key learnings identified for the discussion session.  Questions identified are likely to stimulate exchange of information and participant perspectives, thus promoting further understanding of nursing and/or health care in the US and Russia.

Abstract is clearly presented and developed, provides a coherent sense of what will be presented, is easy to understand, and demonstrates a coherent plan for development of the focus for presentation.  Abstract has a logically developed presentation of ideas with relevant links connecting sections of abstract.

The abstract communicates a clear focus and purpose of the presentation, including rationale and description of (if a paper presentation) how paper will be approached and developed within the 20 minutes allotted for paper presentations or how poster will be developed for display and interaction with conference participants.
Interest

Topic of Focused Discussion Group is of current interest and relevance to nursing education, practice or research.  Topic will stimulate discussion and interaction to further cultural and professional understanding of nursing and health care in Russia and the US.  The selected topic and questions suggest the potential for an active interaction and dialogue between US and Russian participants.

The result of this dialogue has potential for increased understanding of the topic as a basis of learning application in participants’ home settings.

Topic for presentation will provide information that is current and of interest to participants and which is relevant to nursing education, practice, or research.  Topic will stimulate discussion and interaction to further cultural and professional understanding of nursing and health care in Russia and the US.

The topic selected for paper or poster presentation suggests the potential for active follow-up interaction and dialogue between US and Russian participants.  The result of this dialogue has the potential for increased understanding of the topic as a basis of learning application in participants’ home settings.
Quality
Topic selected for Focused Discussion Group is conceptually well grounded, discussion questions are based on nursing concepts/theories and/or relevant research to further understanding of the topic by participants. Topic for presentation is well grounded conceptually, applies nursing concepts/theories and/or relevant research to development of the topic to further understanding of the topic by participants.

Applicability

Topic and questions suggest the potential for an active interaction and dialogue among participants to further understanding of perspectives and concerns across cultures (US, Russia, and other countries) and application of learning in participants’ home settings.

Discussion of the topic will stimulate interaction and sharing of knowledge and perspectives about ways the topic and learnings gained from the discussion can be incorporated by participants into their practice and potentially challenge the thinking of ways to improve both clinical and educational practice.

Topic is based on a theory/concept or research base relevant to nursing.  Paper or poster presentation will provide information for increased understanding and help participants based in Russia, the US and other countries have specific learning or messages for application in their home settings.

Paper/poster topic suggests potential for lively interaction and dialogue to further participant learning at the conference and for application in participants’ home settings.

Presentation of this paper or poster will stimulate participant learning and challenge them to identify new ways of thinking about information presented to their practice or education settings.  Topic has potential to challenge participants to think of ways of applying learnings gained to improve clinical or educational practice.
