WORKING WITH HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS

Background for Discussion Topic:
Volunteers are a critical component in the way a community hospice provides services. Developing and maintaining an effective volunteer program for a hospice requires meeting several challenges. These challenges relate to recruitment and selection of persons to be visit hospice patients, initial orientation to be able to serve as a hospice volunteer, ongoing education and support to be able to work effectively with hospice patients and their families.
The purposes of this discussion group are to explore strategies for recruitment, orientation and provision of ongoing support and education. Understanding what these strategies are and how to implement them will assist participants to gain a better understanding of how to have a hospice volunteer program to serve community patients and their families.
Three Key Questions to Stimulate Group Interaction:
1 What are the needs of hospice patients and what kinds of characteristics are needed in hospice volunteers to work effectively with hospice patients and their families?
2. What strategies may be developed to be able to recruit and select hospice volunteers?
3. What ongoing education and support needs do hospice volunteers have and what are effective ways of providing this education and support?
Two Key Learning's for Participants (objectives). At the end of this discussion, participants will be able to:
1. Identify identify two principles for the development of an effective hospice volunteer program .
2. Describe at least two principles for providing ongoing education for hospice volunteers.
